Understanding iTunes, the Key to the i Pod

If you own an iPod, then you have already encountered iTunes. The iTunes program is a digital medial player application that you can download for free from the Apple website. This program is essential to uploading media to your iPod, making it an integral part of the iPod experience.

iTunes is an application that you download onto your computer. With it you can manage your audio and video files. You can use the program whether or not you own an iPod. With iTunes, you can create “playlists” that make it easy to put the songs you are looking for onto your iPod. You can also copy songs from your CDs and store them as digital files, which can then be uploaded into your iPod. If you have an Internet connection, you can listen to several Internet radio stations through iTunes. You cannot copy DVDs with iTunes at this time.

The songs you store in iTunes are organized into “libraries,” which are groups of songs that are grouped according to information such as artist and genre. This makes it simpler to find music when you have many songs stored in the program. You can view your libraries as title lists, lists with artwork, or a side scroll that features album artwork. Each of these options makes it simple to choose the song you wish to work with in iTunes.

When you connect your iPod to a computer that has iTunes, the program will automatically synchronize the library to the device. If there are any new songs in iTunes, they will be uploaded into the iPod. Any ratings you gave to your music will be transferred to the software or the device, as will your place in any audiobooks you are listening to with the iPod. This automatic feature does delete any songs that you have deleted in your computer, so you may wish to turn off the automatic synchronization in favor of a manual transfer. iPod users can transfer songs from the iPod back to iTunes, but only if the songs were purchased from the iTunes Store. Songs that were ripped from CDs cannot be transferred from the device back to the computer.

Interestingly, the iTunes program preceded the iPod’s development and launch. Must speculation as to whether or not the program was intended to pave the way for the iPod has been made. Regardless of the reason for the development of iTunes, it is a fundamental feature of the iPod’s use, making it a household name for those who own the world’s most popular digital media player.
